PART WORN TYRES

The sale of Part Worn Tyres is perfectly safe & legal, if properly carried out, & is one of the success stories in vehicle recycling.  Reusing tyres makes the best possible use of an item that is difficult and expensive to recycle, by extending its useful life.  It helps keep vehicle recyclers in business & the consumer on the road.

Most vehicles reach the end of their lives through no connection to the state of the tyres.  The vast majority of cars are scrapped because of bodywork corrosion, major mechanical failure or minor accident damage.  Up until the point of scrapping most scrap vehicles are in use & so have perfectly legal tyres.

In the past there has been some bad publicity about part-worn tyres but most of this originates from the new tyre manufacturers (who want customers to be buying expensive new tyres) or from the many ‘cowboy operators’ that are only too happy to cut corners.  So you do need to make sure that any part-worn tyres you purchase are sourced from a reputable dealer.

At Albert Looms Ltd. all our staff are fully trained in what to look for and how to fit part-worn tyres.  We do not sell any tyres that have side-wall damage, are perished or have less than 3mm tread, even though the legal limit is 1.6 mm.  And you are welcome to inspect the tyres before they are fitted.

Here are a few things to be aware of when considering purchasing PWTs.

  • All PWTs should be marked as ‘part worn’ & should be clearly distinguishable from new tyres at the point of sale
  • Insist on examining all PWTs before they are fitted.  Look for signs of damage inside as well as outside.
  • There should be no significant sidewall damage & no repairs to the side wall, no lumps or bulges
  • The law requires car tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre.
  • training certificateThe tread should be evenly worn across the tyre surface.

We strongly recommend that you do not buy PWTs by mail order as there is no way to know whether they have been checked, & some faults may only become apparent when the tyre is fitted to the wheel fully inflated to working pressure & balanced.  A good PWT retailer will be able to do all of this for you.

Fantastic savings on PWTs

The table below demonstrates that part worn tyres offer huge cost savings on new tyres, typically costing much less than ½ that of a new tyre.
